The Institute for Maritime Technology (IMT), a division of the Research and Development Department located in the Western Cape, has the following vacancies. Applications are invited from persons who meet the qualification and experience requirements below.

Chief Scientist: Oceanography
The successful candidate will provide expert oceanographic systems and technology support to the SA Navy.
Key performance areas:
- Expert oceanographic contribution to the development, integration, application and analysis of naval systems
- Manage technical projects with multiple specialists and support personnel as team members
- Provide inputs for long-term capability development plans in above- and below-water environmental characterisation
- Promote and maintain interfaces with the SA Navy
- Conduct explorative research projects
- Collect, structure, manage data, record, analyse, interpret and scientifically report client-related operational and environmental data (naval oceanography)
- Network with the oceanographic and maritime industry
- Mentor junior personnel.
Requirements:
- BSc Honours degree in Natural Sciences with Oceanography
- Experience in the SA Navy environment and systems would be preferred
- 6-8 years' oceanographic research experience
- Project management skills
- Technical reportwriting skills
- Ability to work at sea
- Self-motivated
- Familiarity with geospatial technologies and techniques
- Familiarity with ocean and weather measuring equipment
- Familiarity with analysis software such as Matlab.
