The Heads of State of the African Union, at their Twentieth Ordinary Session of Assembly, held during 27-28 January 2013 in Addis Ababa, welcomed the strategic reorientation and refocusing of UNECA to support accelerated socio-economic transformation of Africa. It is in this context that the Commission is repositioning itself as the prime UN institution in Africa to provide policy guidance to its member States.
UNECA will be announcing in the coming days over 50 professional and higher category posts on the UN Secretariat’s career portal. They will include positions to contribute to the promotion of socio-economic development in Africa as well as to intra-regional integration and international cooperation for Africa’s further development. Statistics is an important focus area for the Commission and the openings will include in areas such as economic statistics and national accounts; demographic and social statistics; geoinformation and sectoral statistics; and data collection and analysis. The positions entail analysis of economic and social sector development at global, regional and national levels. Some jobs are in strategic planning, monitoring and operational quality assurance which will require empirical and substantive research along with analysis of trends, development and related policy issues. Public Information and Knowledge Management is another area where UNECA is focusing on in order to promote global awareness and greater understanding of UNECA’s undertakings using various communication tools and new information technologies. There will be several posts in climate policy, land and mineral development.
