Family Therapy Manuals Development Terms of Reference
Overview Jesuit Refugee Service Kakuma, Counseling Department it seeking a qualified facilitator to develop Family therapy manuals. These manuals will be used to train refugee community counsellors to enable them conduct family therapy sessions to families and couples experiencing emotional and psychological distress. The content of the manuals should emphasize more on practical application rather than on theoretic knowledge.
Kakuma Refugee Camp The Kakuma refugee camp was founded in 1992 in Northwestern Kenya to serve refugees arriving to Kenya from conflict zones in the region (primarily Sudan and Ethiopia). Today, the population of the camp is about 110 000 refugees from 11 different countries with large tribal and language diversity within the national communities. Somali nationals are the majority group within the camp. Other countries represented include Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and others.

Jesuit Refugee Service Kakuma operates a Community Counseling Programme in Kakuma . It has 74 refugee staff and two national staff to provide counseling services. The refugee community counselors undergo 60-hour Basic Counselling Skills Training. Some have undergone 40 hours intensive training on; Group Counselling, Child Counseling, Loss and Grief; Substance Abuse, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Psychological Debriefing, and Family Therapy Techniques.
The community counselors serve refugees with whom they share national and cultural identities. JRS Kakuma Counseling Programme uses the Wellbeing Model of Counseling and Client-Centered Counseling approach.

In the light of the above, the counseling department would like to empower community members trained in basic counseling training skills further to be able to work effectively with individual clients and groups, and families experiencing a wide variety of issues and problem situations.
JRS community counselors had 2 trainings on family therapy course held by JRS which covered the basics of family and couple counselling skills for the community counselors involved. To allow for sustainability of the family therapy program, JRS is seeking the development of family therapy Manuals that would enable to replicate the 2 mentioned training delivered and enable subsequent groups of JRS staff trainees to gain the same skills with the same methodology as the original group. It is expected that the two manuals namely – Introduction to family therapy level 1 ( manual 1) and JRS Family therapy training manual level 2 will cover all the essentials pertaining family therapy.
Specific Objectives ⦁ Drawing on content and methodology of family therapy skills course held in Kakuma by JRS, compile manuals that will enable delivery of 6-day family therapy facilitation skills course to refugees with basic counseling training without any prior formal counselling background.
⦁ The manual should include:
⦁ Relevant /matching personal development exercises that facilitate therapeutic processes in family therapy groups and individuals. This will promote confidence and self-awareness to learners and the achieved skills will help the learner to carry out therapeutic process to families/couples and future family therapy learners.
⦁ practical modes of facilitations in various objectives and personal development exercises facilitative to therapy and emotional growth including multi-cultural approaches
⦁ all content and exercises closely matching with family therapy approaches including; fundamental concepts of family therapy, Bowen family systems, strategic family therapy, structural family therapy, psychoanalytic family therapy, comparative analysis etc.
⦁ Deliver electronic copy of all documents to JRS Kakuma including: electronic copy of the manual in PDF and Microsoft Word format; electronic copy of all accompanying handouts or worksheets in Microsoft Word and PDF format; electronic copy of power point slides to accompany lecture segments of the manual in Microsoft Power point format; bided hard copy of the two manuals. The manuals should be copy righted to JRS and not to the institution /individual authoring.

Facilitator Qualifications:
⦁ Master level education in Counseling Psychology, Clinical psychology, clinical Social Work or related field.
⦁ Demonstrated experience designing and facilitating trainings
⦁ Demonstrated experience designing and facilitating trainings
⦁ Working knowledge of refugees, conflict and displacement
As part of guidance in preparing the manuals, below find the TOR of family therapy training which was conducted in kakuma Refugee Camp to JRS counselors in May 2011, and in 2013.
Family Therapy Training Facilitation
Mode of Delivery
The training will combine both theory and practical demonstrations and plentiful opportunities to practice the new knowledge and skills. Facilitator will take in consideration limited English language abilities of the participants. Using practical case studies/ exercises is encouraged.

Specific Training Objectives
By the end of the training the participants are expected to;
i) Demonstrate a general understanding of family therapy, its advantages Vs disadvantages compared to individual therapy and basic overview of different types of family therapy models.
ii) gain awareness, through self-reflection and instruction, of personal characteristics of effective family therapist and self-evaluate their personal readiness to conduct a therapeutic family sessions
iii) Demonstrate a practical application of basic skills in family therapy.
