OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME : The goal of NTD Programme is to contribute to the regional vision of an "African Region free of NTDs by supporting Member States to establish sustainable national NTD programmes that are capable of achieving the control, elimination and eradication goals of targeted NTDs. Within this context, the major NTDs amenable to preventive chemotherapy in the WHO Africa Region include Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis and Onchocerciasis. Toward strengthening the scale up of preventive chemotherapy interventions, the strategic priorities are to scale up access to mass drug administration for preventive chemotherapy especially for Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis and Trachoma.
Description of duties: Under the direct supervision of the NTD Regional Advisor and the overall guidance of the Director of Disease Prevention and Control Cluster in the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the incumbent duties shall be: 1. Support the development and dissemination of regional multi-year Strategic Plan for Preventive Chemotherapy 2. Provide technical guidance and support to conduct assessment and mapping of disease burden for PCT Diseases and promote their application in countries 3. Provide guidance and technical support for implementation, logistics and monitoring of NTD mass drug administration 4. Provide guidance and technical support for national capacity building for NTD interventions 5. Support initiatives to build and strengthen partnerships and coalitions for NTD programme at the regional and country levels, resource mobilization approaches and strategies and NTD programme monitoring, evaluation and operations research. 6. Participate and lead meetings, teleconferences and video conferences on issues relating to NTD preventive chemotherapy 7. Carry out any duties requested by the supervisor.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Essential: Master's level university degree in Medicine or Public Health, training in parasitology . Desirable: Training in communicable diseases preventions building strategies and approaches; Knowledge of neglected tropical diseases epidemiology, bi-lateral and multi-lateral agencies practices.
Skills:  Extensive knowledge and skills in preventive chemotherapy approaches and methodologies as well as strategies to effectively support NTD mapping and disease burden assessments. Ability to build capacity in various aspects of programme implementation, particularly evaluation of the impact of mass drug administration and conducting transmission assessment surveys for NTDs. Ability to establish effective networks and working relationships with people of different nationalities and cultural background. Computer skills - Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and data analysis, browsing and information searching on the internet..
Experience: Essential: At least seven years of experience in communicable and neglected tropical diseases-related activities, of which at least 3 years should be at national or international level. Desirable: Working experience with WHO or other international experience would be an asset. A minimum of 3 years of working experience in joint or multi sectorial projects in health or integration of donor's expectations in programmes development would be an asset.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English or French and a good working knowledge of the other. Working knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset.
Annual salary: (Net of tax) USD 67483 at single rate USD 72467 with primary dependants
